Sustainability Pills - Why to replace PET plastic with post-consumer resin?
The plastic is a versatile material that is present in almost all products we have contact with and plays a key role in modern society. Since it is an overindustrialized fossil-sourced material (resins derived from oil), plastic as it is used today in most products takes from 400 to 500 years to decompose in nature.
Around 11 million tons of plastic escape annually into the oceans, impairing the whole marine ecosystem, and estimates suggest that if things don't change, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the seas than fish*!
To prevent this, plastic must be used more consciously and need to have a more efficient life cycle in society, that is, it needs to be used, recycled and renewed for a new purpose and usage. This is where post-consumer resin or PCR plastic comes in.
The use of post-consumer resin to manufacture new packaging contributes to reduce the amount of plastic waste that escapes into the oceans, meeting a sustainable consumption principle, besides strengthening the relationship pf society with the recycling cooperatives and the environment.
